 The Four Levels of Happiness®

Your Path to Personal Flourishing

We seek satisfaction in many things: a good life, meaningful work, achievement, and the chance to make a difference. Yet even when we get what we want, we may still feel that something is missing.

Fr. Robert Spitzer’s Four Levels of Happiness® help explain why. Pleasure and achievement are genuine goods. A leader can enjoy a meal, earn a degree, and take pride in work well done. The question is whether those things become the measure of a life and the sole basis for decisions that are made.

The four levels challenge leaders to see how their desire for happiness shape their decisions both personally and professionally and how those decisions shape organizational culture.

Level 1

Pleasure & Gratification

Seeks: Pleasure and comfort through food, rest, and entertainment.

What it looks like: Behavior is shaped by the question "Will this make me comfortable right now?"

The limitation: The satisfaction is immediate and intense, but it fades quickly.

Level 2

Ego & Achievement

Seeks: Self-worth through achievement and recognition.

What it looks like: Setting goals, building expertise, earning degrees, and taking pride in good work.

The limitation: Although satisfying and intense, it's short-term and can depend on comparison and approval.

Level 3

Contributive & Empathetic

Seeks: The good news in others and  to help them flourish.

What it looks like: Setting goals, building expertise, earning degrees, and taking pride in good work.

The limitation:  People and projects are finite. Even meaningful service cannot fulfill every human desire.

Level 4

Transcendent & Spiritual

Seeks: Ultimate truth, love, goodness, beauty and being.

What it looks like:  Pondering the transcendent, loving others, and acting with hope and gratitude.

The limitation: None. We can experience it now; its fullness awaits us eternally in knowing & loving God.
